SAP Sapphire 2025 & 2026 BTP Updates

Key BTP platform announcements from SAP Sapphire 2025 and early 2026 previews — AI Agent capabilities, Build Code GA, Business Data Cloud, Private Link expansion, and the ABAP Cloud roadmap.

BTP Platform Roadmap — Sapphire 2025 to 2026
Rendering diagram…

Executive Summary

SAP Sapphire 2025 (June, Orlando) was a landmark event for BTP — focused on Agentic AI, Business Data Cloud launch, and developer productivity. Key themes: AI-first development (Joule custom agents, CAP AI SDK), unified data platform (Business Data Cloud combining Datasphere + SAC + S/4 data fabric), and infrastructure maturity (Private Link GCP GA, ae1 UAE region expansion, Kyma 3.0).

AI & Agentic Intelligence Announcements

AI-First BTP Strategy
SAP Sapphire 2025 signalled a clear strategic shift: AI is no longer an add-on to BTP — it is the primary development paradigm. Every new BTP service and tool has AI integration as a first-class feature.
  • Joule Custom Skills GA: Build custom Joule skills using Joule Studio — production-ready, no longer in preview. Skills can call CAP services, S/4HANA APIs, and external tools
  • AI Agent Framework (Preview): Multi-agent orchestration announced — agents can spawn sub-agents, use registered tools, and access SAP data via semantic APIs
  • Generative AI Hub v2: 50+ foundation models available (Mistral Large, Llama 3.1 70B, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, GPT-4o) — multi-model routing with automatic fallback
  • AI Foundation on BTP: Unified AI infrastructure layer — standardised APIs for all SAP AI services; simplifies switching between models and AI capabilities
  • ABAP AI: AI-generated ABAP code directly in ADT (Eclipse) and SAP Business App Studio — powered by Joule understanding of ABAP object context

Development Platform Updates

  • SAP Build Code GA (formerly preview): AI-assisted full-stack development with Joule integrated. Generates CAP data models, OData services, Fiori Elements UI, and unit test stubs from natural language
  • CAP AI SDK (Preview): Official SDK for building AI-powered CAP services — vector search (HANA Cloud Vector Engine), embedding generation, LLM calls with automatic retry and cost tracking
  • SAP Build Apps v6: Joule integration for UI generation from text descriptions; process automation triggers directly from Build Apps canvas
  • ABAP Cloud IDE in BAS: ABAP development fully supported in SAP Business App Studio using ABAP Development Tools (ADT) extension — no separate Eclipse installation required
  • CAP Plugins ecosystem: 15+ official SAP CAP plugins released at Sapphire (audit log, attachments, notifications, change tracking) — production-grade, zero custom code

Data & Integration Updates

  • Business Data Cloud (BDC) GA: New unified product combining SAP Datasphere, SAC, and S/4HANA data fabric — announced as the future of SAP data strategy, replacing standalone Datasphere for new customers
  • Integration Suite AI-powered Mapping: Joule generates field mapping rules automatically from source/target schema — reduces integration mapping time from hours to minutes
  • Event Broker Preview: Next-generation event streaming service replacing SAP Event Mesh. Kafka-compatible API, higher throughput (1M+ messages/sec), lower latency, better observability
  • Datasphere + SAC Unified UI: Combined user interface for analytics and data management coming in 2025 Q4 — single login, shared data context, integrated story publishing
Event Mesh Deprecation
SAP Event Mesh is entering maintenance mode. New event-driven projects should use Event Broker (once GA). Existing Event Mesh implementations should plan migration within 18 months. Migration guide and tooling are expected at SAP TechEd 2025.

Infrastructure & Platform Updates

  • Private Link GCP GA: Google Cloud Platform Private Link now generally available — BTP can connect to services hosted on GCP VPCs without public internet exposure
  • BTP Region ae1 (UAE) expansion: New services added to the UAE (Abu Dhabi) region: AI Core, Generative AI Hub, ABAP Cloud environment, SAP Build Code — critical for UAE/Middle East data residency
  • Kyma 3.0: Istio service mesh upgrade to 1.19, Kyma Functions updated to Node.js 20, improved Kyma Observability (OpenTelemetry-native), simplified Kyma Module installation
  • BTP Cockpit UX refresh: New guided navigation, improved entitlement management UI, cost analytics dashboard, and simplified subaccount creation wizard
  • BTP Governance Center (Announced): Unified compliance and policy management across all global account subaccounts — planned for 2026 H1

2026 Preview Announcements

  • Multi-Region HA (Preview 2026 H1): Active-active BTP deployment across two regions — automatic failover with zero data loss for HANA Cloud and CF applications
  • BTP Governance Center: Centralised compliance, policy, and entitlement management across all subaccounts in a global account hierarchy
  • AI-powered BTP Operations: Joule-based anomaly detection for BTP runtime health — proactive alerts for CF app crashes, HANA Cloud memory pressure, and integration failures
  • Extended Clean Core Validation: ATC (ABAP Test Cockpit) checks integrated into CI/CD pipeline as a BTP managed service — cloud-delivered ABAP quality gate

Advisory: UAE / DEWA Customers

ae1 Region Expansion — Action Required
For DEWA and UAE government customers, the ae1 region expansion with AI Core and Generative AI Hub availability is the most impactful Sapphire 2025 announcement. It enables UAE data-residency-compliant AI workloads on BTP without routing data to European regions (eu10/eu20). Evaluate migrating AI Core instances from eu10 to ae1 before Q4 2025. Confirm with the Data Protection Officer that current eu10 AI workloads comply with UAE data residency requirements while migration is planned.

ae1 now available: AI Core, Generative AI Hub, ABAP Cloud Environment, SAP Build Code, CAP (Cloud Foundry), SAP BAS, HANA Cloud.

ae1 still pending: Integration Suite Enterprise Edition, Event Broker, Business Data Cloud — expected 2025 Q3/Q4.

Migration effort: AI Core migration from eu10 to ae1 requires creating new service instances in ae1 subaccount, updating Destination configurations, and migrating trained models. Estimated 2–4 weeks for a standard AI Core deployment.

Common Adoption Pitfalls

Adopting Preview features in production
Preview features have no SLA guarantees and may introduce breaking API changes without warning. Always validate Preview features in sandbox before considering production rollout.
Ignoring Event Mesh deprecation
SAP Event Mesh is being succeeded by Event Broker. The migration has a defined timeline — delaying assessment risks a forced, unplanned migration in a future release cycle.
Not evaluating ae1 region for AI workloads
UAE government customers may have a compliance obligation to keep data within UAE borders. AI Core and Gen AI Hub are now available in ae1 — evaluate migration from eu10.
