Overview
SAP Business AI is SAP's umbrella brand for all AI capabilities across the portfolio. The strategy is built on three pillars: Relevant (AI that understands SAP business context and data), Reliable (grounded in structured SAP data, not hallucination-prone generic LLMs), and Responsible (transparent, privacy-preserving, and compliant with GDPR and AI Act requirements).
Concretely, SAP Business AI manifests at three levels: (1) Embedded features in standard SAP applications — AI-Assisted Easy Filter, Smart Summarization, Intelligent Insights, and Joule Booster navigation in S/4HANA Fiori apps; (2) Platform AI services on BTP — SAP AI Core, Gen AI Hub, AI Business Services (document extraction, text classification); and (3) Joule, the conversational AI copilot that orchestrates AI capabilities across all SAP applications.
SAP's AI ethics principles include: human oversight of AI-generated decisions, explainability of AI recommendations, data minimisation, no re-training of models on customer data without explicit consent, and bias monitoring integrated into model lifecycle management on SAP AI Core.
Embedded AI in S/4HANA 2025 OP
Users type natural language in any Fiori Elements list report filter bar (e.g., "invoices from last month over 10,000 EUR from Germany"). AI translates to structured filter criteria without coding. Available on all Fiori Elements V4 apps.
AI-generated text summaries appear at the top of object pages (Purchase Order, Sales Order, Maintenance Notification). Summarises key status, open items, and relevant context, reducing the need to scroll through all sections.
Contextual AI analysis cards embedded in specific Fiori apps that surface anomalies, recommendations, and peer benchmarks. For example: "Your DSO is 12 days above the industry median" on the Cash Flow Analytics app.
Joule conversational navigation that understands "Show me my open purchase orders" and navigates directly to the correct Fiori app, pre-filtered to the user's data. Requires Joule Booster BTP setup on PCE systems.
Responsible AI Principles
Every AI recommendation is presented as an assist — users confirm before AI actions take effect. No autonomous writes without approval.
SAP's AI outputs include confidence scores and feature importance indicators where applicable, especially in Smart Predict models.
Customer data is not used to retrain foundation models. Gen AI Hub prompts and completions are processed in SAP-managed infrastructure.
SAP AI Core includes model monitoring hooks for bias detection and data drift — triggerable in CI/CD pipelines.
SAP's AI use cases are classified by risk level per the EU AI Act. High-risk use cases (HR, credit scoring) include mandatory human review.
SAP publishes its AI ethics policy and maintains an AI ethics advisory panel. AI-generated content in UI is labelled accordingly.
