S/4HANA Modernization & Joule Readiness Center
From SAP GUI to Fiori to SAP Business AI to Joule — a comprehensive modernization reference mapping every classic transaction to its modern Fiori experience and SAP-confirmed Joule readiness, framed as a governed transformation journey.
Modernization Overview
Evolution from SAP GUI to Fiori to embedded AI to Joule — and the SAP Business AI vision for the SAP Business Suite user experience.
SAP Business Suite — User Experience Evolution
Dynpro screens driven by T-codes (VA01, ME21N, FB50). Powerful but expert-only — deep menu trees, no role tailoring, no analytics in context.
Task-based Fiori apps on the Launchpad. Responsive, role-specific, analytics-embedded. Fiori-first is the mandatory design standard for S/4HANA.
Fiori Elements AI features — AI-Assisted Easy Filter, Smart Summarization, Intelligent Insights Cards — surface intelligence directly inside standard apps.
Natural-language navigation, status queries, summarization and approvals across SD / MM / FI / Asset Mgmt. Delivered via BTP on Cloud Private Edition.
Joule Agents that plan, reason and act across multi-step business processes with human-in-the-loop control. SAP-stated direction — not yet GA on-prem.
Executive Summary
For three decades the SAP user experience was defined by the transaction code. S/4HANA reframes that experience around the business role: Fiori apps replace dynpro screens, analytics move into the flow of work, and — with S/4HANA 2025 and SAP Joule — the interface itself becomes conversational. This Center maps every classic transaction to its modern Fiori successor and its SAP-confirmed Joule readiness, then frames the journey from GUI → Fiori → Embedded AI → Joule → Agentic AI as a governed, phased transformation. It is a decision instrument for CIO / CAIO organisations, enterprise and SAP architects, functional consultants and business process owners — not a feature catalogue. Roadmap items are clearly separated from generally-available capability throughout.

Fiori Adoption Analysis
A five-band classification to sequence the move from SAP GUI to a Fiori-first experience.
No Fiori successor — typically Basis, configuration (SPRO) or deep technical transactions.
Guidance: Retain in the compatibility tier; restrict access by role. Do not invest in Fiori parity.
A Fiori app exists but the GUI transaction is still widely used.
Guidance: Pilot the Fiori app with power users; add to Launchpad role catalogs; measure adoption.
SAP recommends the Fiori app as the primary path; GUI remains as fallback.
Guidance: Make the Fiori app the default in business-role spaces; deprecate GUI access progressively.
Fiori is mandatory standard; the modern app carries analytics and (often) AI features.
Guidance: GUI access for these flows should be the exception, governed by clean-core principles.
Strategic successor is a different product or paradigm (e.g. EWM, SuccessFactors, conversational).
Guidance: Plan the platform move; treat the current app as transitional. Sequence in the roadmap.
Joule Readiness Framework
How to read Joule readiness across the app estate — what is confirmed today versus on the roadmap.
SAP-confirmed Joule capability available today on S/4HANA 2025 OP / Cloud PCE, with a specific documented capability and source (e.g. Sales Order status, PO navigation, Maintenance Recommendations).
No app-specific transactional Joule intent, but the app benefits from Fiori Elements AI — AI-Assisted Easy Filter, Smart Summarization — enabling "ask the data" interactions on its lists and object pages.
SAP-announced roadmap target demonstrated at TechEd or listed in the Discovery Center (e.g. conversational PR / sales-order creation). NOT yet generally available — must not be presented as shipping.
Longer-horizon SAP direction — autonomous Joule Agents acting across multi-step processes with human-in-the-loop. Strategic intent, no GA commitment for on-prem today.

Modernization Scorecard
A five-level maturity model — use the signals to self-assess your current level and target.
Work is performed almost entirely through classic transactions; Fiori is absent or cosmetic.
Some Fiori apps deployed but GUI remains the default for most daily work.
Role-based Fiori is the primary experience for the majority of users; GUI is the exception.
Embedded Fiori Elements AI features (Easy Filter, Smart Summarization, Insight Cards) are in active use.
Conversational Joule (and, progressively, agents) are part of daily work, governed and measured.
Assessment Framework
Score each business process area (Section 3) against the five levels using usage analytics (ST03N / Fiori usage), adoption metrics and clean-core posture. The lowest-scoring high-volume areas become the prioritised backlog for the roadmap (Section 8). Target state for most enterprises on S/4HANA 2025 OP is Level 4 → 5: AI-assisted, progressively Joule-enabled, governed and measured.
